Proper Requirements Analysis and Specification is the most important contributor to the successful accomplishment of the system development process.  This cannot be emphasized enough!  This book, therefore, concentrates on a pragmatic “how to do it” way to accomplish these activities, without the aid of academia System Engineering philosophies/methodologies and/or international desires/definitions.

This is a book about Requirements Analysis and Specification in the early System Engineering stages associated with any program, from the initial buyer (contracting organization) tasks in the Concept Refinement and Technology phase to the detailed design and definition activities by the Contractor in the front end of the System Development and Demonstration Phase.  It includes not only the requirements studies and definition activities, but also the partitioning and decomposition of these requirements into a formulated architecture and the allocation of these requirements to the major system components of this architecture.  The emphasis throughout is on System and Subsystem level requirements analysis activities and not on detailed product or process specifications.  Detailed quantative methodologies (i.e., Link Budget, Power Consumption, Bit Error Rate, Reliability, etc.) are not presented since this book concentrates on functional requirements definition and partitioning.   DoD and International Directives, Instructions, Standards, and Guide Book information are summarized and referenced in order to provide more specific guidance.

By requirements analysis and specification, I mean all of the activities and documents that go from the User Needs Statement to the final system and subsystem level specifications.  These activities include operational concept documentation, system level specifications, partitioning/decomposition, architecture formulation, and requirements allocation to the sub-system components or functional areas.  The charts contained within this book are exact replicas of the viewgraphs used in the Lano Enterprises Advanced System Engineering course called “Requirements Analysis and Specification”.  The material is very dense, using graphical charts to take the place of many, many words.  It is hoped that this method of presentation will be much more memorable/referenceable than the standard “wording” techniques used in many papers.

This book also contains a definition of the concepts and six major tools used in the overall LANO (Logical Analysis of Nodes and Objects) system engineering Methodology.
